"Parables: The Stories Jesus Told”

There is perhaps no genre of the New Testament more misinterpreted and misapplied than Jesus’ parables. The tendency to read into the Scriptures our preconceived ideas and theological notions is greatest in those passages that are the most obscure. While Jesus always told His parables in a particular context, it becomes very easy (but not proper) to lift the story from its historical setting and reinterpret it according to our dealings with Aunt Frances or the previous month’s church business meeting.

Even if we maintain good hermeneutical principles as we study the parables of Jesus, sometimes we still struggle to understand them. For example, in the parable of the lost sheep (cf. Luke 15:4-10), why was the shepherd so overjoyed when he found what was lost, especially when a first-century shepherd would never leave the ninety-nine sheep in the first place? And why did he carry the sheep on his shoulders when no reason is given for why it should not walk on its own? Moreover, when Jesus mentions “righteous persons who need no repentance” (v. 7), does He really mean “self-righteous” hypocrites? Or could He be gently wooing those who place their faith in God to open their hearts to the possibility that God wants more to be saved?

On Sundays from 5-7pm in September, I will lead a Fall Bible Study for our adults called “Parables: The Stories Jesus Told.” There will be no cost to attend. There are no textbooks to buy. Just bring an open Bible and an open heart. It will be a great time as we learn from one another.

In Christ,
Pastor David
